It all began in 1522 when the property was sold to the city. It used the existing structure as a prison and continued to do so for a long period. As a result, many believe that its name originated from here. In the 16th Century, some Spanish soldiers misunderstood the word "vrunt" (prison) for vriend, meaning friend, and started calling Amigo, Spanish, for a friend.

Later in the 1950s, the Blanton Family converted the building into a hotel to welcome royalty and visiting nobilities worldwide who came to Brussels for the World's Fair in 1958.

Hotel Amigo continued as a rather uninspired accommodation until the year 2000 when Rocco Forte Hotels acquired and carefully refurbished it to what it is today. With an extensive renovation, designer Olga Polizzi restored the building to its former glory. Her team worked tirelessly to protect its artistic, cultural heritage and enabled Hotel Amigo to reclaim its spot as Brussels' best luxury hotel.
