What It’s Like in Massawa 🇪🇷 – 34 Years of Eritrean Independence

I stayed at Hotel Dahka, right on the Red Sea, and explored the beautiful and haunting streets of this historic port town. From old Ottoman and Italian colonial architecture to quiet coastal corners, Massawa tells stories through its ruins and resilience.

While I was there, we got lucky and witnessed a small parade ahead of Eritrea’s 34th Independence Day — a spontaneous celebration of a proud nation’s freedom.

Massawa is raw, real, and unforgettable.
