They defeated the bandits and the place was given a new name called ARBAETA Asmara which meant the four females united in the Tigrinya Language. Abaerta was later dropped and the place was called Asmara henceforth.
Italians constructed buildings in Asmara that had Italian designs which gave Asmara the look of an Italian city. Until today many buildings and stores in Asmara still have Italian designs and names and for this reason the city has been nicknamed the Little Rome.
The United Nations Placed Eritrea and Asmara Under Ethiopian Control in the 1880s, but in 1960 the people of Eritrea started fighting to regain their independence. The war ended in 1991 when Eritrea was given back to the Eritrean People.
